Dear Colleague Letter
Rep. John Larson sent the following letter to his colleagues in the House of Representatives last week. Our Representatives have heard from a colleague; now it's time they hear from us. Please make the call today!
November 9, 2007
Dear Colleague:
I am writing to invite you to join me as an original cosponsor on legislation I hope to soon introduce that would provide for fair elections in the House of Representatives.
The House Fair Elections Now Act is similar to legislation recently enacted in Connecticut that provides for public financing for political campaigns, and to legislation that has been proposed in the Senate, S. 1285, by Senator Durbin. Other states like Arizona, Maine, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, and Vermont have also passed legislation or initiatives allowing for the public financing of various levels of elections, as have the cities of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Portland, Oregon.
The legislation will restore public confidence in the election process by creating a voluntary system allowing office seekers for the U.S. House of Representatives the option to forego private funding of their election campaigns – without having to unilaterally disarm. It will also free members to devote their time and energy to talking with their constituents about the issues that are important to them.
Over the next few weeks I will be sending out a series of Dear Colleague letters highlighting additional details about the various aspects of this legislation. If you would like to join me as an original cosponsor, would like additional information, or have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
John B. Larson
Member of Congress - First District, Connecticut
Vice Chair, House Democratic Caucus
